Captive

What is happening to me?

This winding staircase rippling in my dream. It comes close yet moves farther away. Where can I go from here. Is there a path?

“Hey fella, do you have a death wish”, I heard them scream. But who they are, I do not know.

I chose to ignore them. I harken forward. Towards unknown territories beckoning me from beyond.

Tantalizing lights gleamed in front of me.

I couldn’t hold myself in any longer. I followed their call. In their shimmering glory, I could see their malice.

Yet I followed. Like there is a magnet pulling me forward. I had no volition of my own anymore. I was purely and utterly spell bound.

I reached the lights, tried to hold them in the fist of my palm, so I can hold them close to me just to prove to myself that beauty was within my grasp.

But they eluded me. Disappeared the moment I lifted my arms to grab them.

Undaunted, I picked and poked, thrashed and flailed,

But they still eluded me.

Until I was standing in the blackest of the blackness,

Coldest of the coldness.

All that kept me going was the knowledge

though the beauty eluded me, it was still a captive,

imprinted forever in the depths of my brain.

Where it could never evade my grasp.
